Fear of needles stopping me from getting surgery?

My fear of needles, is stopping me from getting surgery. I can’t even draw blood without going into shock or something similar to it. Is it possible for them to put me out right when I go into the hospital?
I’m a lucky 1 in a few who have Marfans Syndrome which is a type of scoliosis that causes my back to curve over instead of like an S. The surgery is to have it fixed, and it’d be better to do it now, than later when I’m older. But I have an extreme fear of needles and even talking when it’s happenin doesn’ help, as my mother explained what happened to me, the doctor type person got the needle in, *shivers* I felt and remember that, and that’s all I remember, I woke up 10 minutes later convulsing in the chair and smelling alcohol, and apparently I should’ve gone to the restroom first >.>. They were about to call 911 how fun.

I suffer from a fear of needles too! I have taken a lot of avoidance tactics eg I had to have a bronchoscopy ( tube to lok in my lungs)…I agreed only if I had no needles….which is how it turned out (I was actually his guinea pig as apart from lung trasplant paitents who have them often…I was the first one without any meds except local squirted on my nose and throat!!!). I was proud I did it without needles actually, but I understand I cannot get away from this forever!
I have had 2 blood tests since (my first ones)….where I cried at both (the last only a few weeks ago!), I just had to accept i NEEDED it. There was no choice. I do not look anywhere near the needles.
Have you used the “magic” numbing cream??? this may be helpful to you if you haven’t tried it.
I was also in another situation where I was possibly going to have surgery and I said I hated needles and was told there were other ways to put me out!! So I think you need to talk about it with the Dr….they surely have had this before!!! Try to think of the benefits too!

Emetophobia is the name for the fear of vomiting, fear of being sick, or fear of vomiting.

Clients often call the therapist for help in overcoming the fear of vomiting, believing that only they have this fear or phobia.

Contrary to this popular misperception, Emetophobia not at all uncommon. It is actually the sixth most common phobia. Knowing this, it really is quite amazing that this particular fear is so little discussed.

Perhaps this is because vomiting is one of the issues that people tend to avoid discussion. But perhaps the main reason is because those who suffer from Emetophobia – in common with which the experience of other irrational fears and phobias – often feel a kind of shame for doing so.

These feelings, however, are completely unnecessary and unjustified. And with the right kind of hypnotherapy for conversion, the fear of vomiting can be taken care quickly.

Very often, cause fear or vomiting is not complex at all. At some point in the past, the individual has linked emetophobic vomiting, nausea, vomiting or an intense, So sometimes even the thought of vomit or vomiting can automatically trigger the terrible feeling of fear and target = "_blank" title = "anxiety"> anxiety.

Is it my imagination or are more people who have phobias today? Maybe this is not the case, perhaps, there are certainly more people who are willing talking about having a phobia or suffer from anxiety. Phobias do not have a stigma associated with them, and rightly so.

It is inevitable that when you live in an environment The more you travel or move in different circles more frequently than anxiety and phobias are more likely to arise. Our grandparents and great grandparents lived very different lives to what we experienced when living in a limited environment more easily within the confines of their comfort zone. There is less going on which could lead to a reaction phobic.

But anxiety is the answer in fact rooted in our earliest ancestors. The surge of adrenalin that we live in times of threat (commonly known as the "fight or flight") has stayed with us throughout the course of our evolution. The forms of threat has changed, but our physiological response natural and instinctive remains the same. In earliest times it was essential, that had to be prepared to fight or flee when faced with a hungry beast looking a dinner of meat.

As a result of natural selection, those with the most effective "fight or flight" response ended up as survivors, and that these genes have come to you and me. And so every time we perceive something that could be interpreted as a threat, this natural reaction and automatically kicks your heart starts to beat faster and the whole body goes on red alert.

This reaction is good and necessary, provided that the threat is a threat. Is not good when the perceived threat leads to a fear of flying or a fear of heights or claustrophobia or maybe even just thin air. When you step back and see the sequence of events leading to the creation of a phobia, it is easier to see how to find cure the phobia.

When you understand that the physical sensations are only experienced your body's natural reaction to a perceived threat, also shows that these physical sensations are "wired" and that they will not change. The point at which change can take place is in how they perceive the threat as a threat. To cure a phobia has to take a step back and learn to see things from a different angle, from a different perspective. The anxiety response will remain inactive as long as you're doing perceptions are not seen as a threat.

Therefore, those looking for a cure phobia need to find a way which to see airplanes, spiders, heights or anything else in a different light. You know on a logical level and aware of how to think about them. However, the emotional and subconscious response rides over this logic. And so the obvious place that will affect your phobia to cure is the area of your subconscious.

Our minds are gentle creatures who often succumb to irrational fears and phobias. At the heart of these fears and phobias are often events in early childhood which caused a huge sense of entrapment in the hands of what is now more afraid. But as the mind can be a be relentless and create these phobias, which can form and released from the hold of that. While it can be comical, heart-breaking or occasionally even maddening, there is a perfectly logical explanation for Separation Anxiety in children. As a new parent, you probably enjoyed watching your child progress through the recognizable stages of development. In fact, you and your friends probably got together and compared these stages. How old were the babies when they first recognized you? When they rolled over for the first time? (Of course, your baby probably did these things significantly early and has already proven to be a genius!)

 

Despite your child’s obviously superior intellect, you can generally expect the stages of development to happen in a certain order and at a reasonably predictable rate. This means that Separation Anxiety in children can be anticipated to appear around eight or nine months of age and to persist at varying degrees as the child becomes a toddler. Until this point, pretty much every object, situation and experience has been a new revelation for the baby, and rather than being shocked by the newness of it all, it is seen as typical to constantly be encountering the unusual. Over those first several months, the baby learns to associate the primary caregiver(s) with safety and security.

The development of Separation Anxiety in children corresponds not only to the recognition of caregivers as ’safe,’ but also to the beginnings of children’s mobility. In the animal kingdom, most babies must be able to walk shortly after birth, and just watching a new calf or duckling that has been separated from its mother will demonstrate that they are also born (or hatched, as the case may be) with an ingrained sense of Separation Anxiety. Humans develop it around the same time that we are learning to toddle about under our own power. The instinctual desire to return to the caregiver keeps us from wandering too far.

So, while many parents worry about causing some sort of emotional disorder in their children by attending ‘Girls’ Night Out’ or some equivalent non-baby-inclusive event, it is important to remember that Separation Anxiety in children is a necessary stage in the development of these little people. In fact, a complete lack of Separation Anxiety may be cause for concern, as it helps keep us safe. Of course, that knowledge doesn’t make it any easier to leave a tearful toddler at daycare or to convince a clinging preschooler to get out of the minivan in the morning.

In addition to your child’s natural progression through the stages of development, there are a few factors that can contribute to the anxiety. For example, if the child is particularly tired, he or she may exhibit more anxiety-induced behaviors. Major changes in the child’s daily routine, such as a new nanny or a new routine at daycare, can also increase the child’s discomfort and cause a reaction. Family changes can bring about anxiety, as well, so the addition of a new sibling or a death, divorce or illness in the family can trigger Separation Anxiety in children.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of several anxiety disorders. Obsessive-compulsive disorders Symptoms (OCD) are having behaviors or thoughts that are over and over again and if these behavior or thoughts are not done then there is an anxious feeling of incompleteness. Some of the behaviors are normal everyday things, for example washing ones hands, checking doors or stoves, and some of the things can be unusual, counting to ten, counting while waiting for someone, hoarding money, or other things. These symptoms can range from mild to severe. Treatments for OCD consist of antidepressants (Prozac or Zoloft for instance) and certain kinds of behavior therapy that are intended to help stop the behavior.

What is OCD?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder that causes obsessions which are irrational thoughts that the patient is unable to get rid of. Compulsions are usually the actions that relate to the obsessive thoughts. One example might be thinking "My hands are full of germs" and therefore washing them over and over because one is not able to get the thought out of the mind. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) symptoms cause a lot of stress and sometimes even so much embarrassment that treatment is sometimes difficult to ask for even professional counseling. The patient often tries to hide these obsessions and compulsions so their friends won’t think they are weird.

Causes of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
While medical researchers haven’t been able to learn exactly what causes OCD, they are beginning to have an understanding of OCD and what the causes might be. Often OCD is found in more than one family member, signifying that it might be genetic. Other research has found that there is a chemical imbalance in several different areas of the brain. Sometimes patients do better when being given Serotonin, so that makes them believe that low Serotonin levels might somehow be involved with OCD. Medical researchers are looking forward to Better understanding OCD in the future.

Signs and Symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Obsessions are involuntary, recurring, undesirable thoughts that haunt the patient with such alarm that some action, such as washing their hands, must be taken to eliminate or reduce the distressing thought. These patients’ obsessions are mostly concerning: the need to be cleaner, repeated doubts, sexual thoughts, aggressive feelings and thoughts, the need to be extremely orderly and neat. Compulsions are actions that a patient feels the need to do because they are unable to let the doubts go even after all the evidence is there that the doubt is not needed. Often these compulsions concern cleanliness, the constant need to be reassured, a constant need to do actions over and over. Some of the results of these compulsions may be seen, such as sore, irritated hands from washing repeatedly, extreme reactions to otherwise normal situations such as slight messiness in a room.

Medical treatment in both children and adults should be sought if there comes a time when either the obsessions or the compulsions or both have too much affect upon the patients’ lives or those around them. Embarrassment is common with this problem, however, there is treatment and counselors will not judge. Children may not always know when they are obsessing more than they should, so of course it’s up to relatives or parents to determine whether treatment is necessary for them.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Treatment and Medications
A counselor will do all that is necessary to diagnose this sometimes complicated emotional state. He might check for red, irritated hands that are caused by constant washing. In addition, he will ask certain questions of both the patient and relatives and other acquaintances that may have seen some of the obsessions or compulsions.

The diagnostic criteria are these obsessions are not just extreme worries concerning regular life, these are unnatural and excessive. These worries cause a lot of anxiety and interfere with the patient’s daily life. The patient at some point realizes that these obsessions and compulsions are a result of their own minds malfunction, and not reality. The patient tries to deny or ignore the obsessions. When diagnosing Compulsions they must be recurring actions that the patient feels the need to do. These physical or mental compulsions are done in order to somehow deal with stresses that are not real.

Should these be present then counseling, consisting of changing beliefs about the stressful situations and exposing the patient to what would normally cause a compulsion (a dirty room, dirty hands etc) and having the patient resist acting on the compulsion. The patient would work on different compulsions until he feels comfortable resisting the compulsive thought or action. Anti-anxiety medication is also given, however this medication generally takes nearly three months to take effect.

Obsessive compulsive disorder is a difficult disorder to live with and can be very embarrassing for the patient. However, there is treatment and hope for these patients.

Not surprisingly, the majority of American workers suffer from stress and anxiety in their daily lives. However, according to a new survey by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA), close to half of U.S. employees report experiencing daily anxiety that is persistent and excessive. And while only 9 percent have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, almost one-third have taken prescription medication to manage stress, anxiety and related disorders.

A certain amount of stress and anxiety is normal-at work and at home. A looming deadline, an unpaid bill or other pressures can cause anyone to suffer physical and mental symptoms of anxiety, which usually subside after a short period of time or after the problem is resolved. However, "persistent, excessive and irrational anxiety that interferes with everyday functioning is often an indication of an anxiety disorder," explains ADAA President & CEO Jerilyn Ross, M.A., L.I.C.S.W.

Affecting approximately 40 million American adults, anxiety disorders are serious medical conditions that fill people’s lives with overwhelming anxiety, worry and fear. They include generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder and specific phobias. Although serious conditions, these disorders are treatable.

Other key findings from the Stress & Anxiety Disorders Survey include:

• Almost three-quarters of people who have stress or anxiety say it interferes with their lives at least moderately.

• One in four employees reports persistent stress or excessive anxiety has impaired their ability to function in the past six months.

• Almost half of people diagnosed with an anxiety disorder say their condition affects their performance, quality of work, and relationships with people at work.

Stress Management At Work

The demands of the workplace, including deadlines, presentations and interactions with many different people, are major sources of stress for everyone. However, for people with anxiety disorders, these demands can make their symptoms worse. The ADAA offers these tips for everyone for managing workplace stress and anxiety:

• Practice time management. Make to-do lists. Prioritize your work. Schedule time for each task. Take a time-management course if necessary.

• Plan, prepare and don’t procrastinate. Get started on major projects as early as possible. Anticipate problems and do what you can to prevent them.

• Be realistic. Don’t overcommit yourself by volunteering for projects you don’t have time for.

• Communicate with your boss. Speak up-calmly and diplomatically-if you have too much on your plate. Your boss may not realize you’re overextended.

If you feel overwhelmed by stress and anxiety, and stress-reduction methods are not working, speak to your doctor or a mental health professional.

During her first year of life, your newborn will develop a strong attachment to you. As young as six months old, your baby may start to become upset when you leave her at daycare, with a relative, or with the babysitter. Separation anxiety is a normal part of infant development. Most babies experience separation anxiety between 12 and 18 months of age, though early signs may be evident by six or seven months.

Toddlers usually experience separation anxiety when their parents leave them with a caregiver to go to work, run errands, or enjoy a night out. Although this normal stage in development typically only lasts a few months, it can be very frustrating and stressful for both the parents and the little one.

Some parents try to keep separations to a minimum as they wait for their child to outgrow the stage. But for many parents, returning to work is not an option. It may be easier to leave your little one with a friend or relative that she is already familiar with until she has resolved her separation anxieties. If you choose a caregiver that your baby doesn’t know, spend some time visiting the new environment prior to her first day. Separation may not be as difficult if your baby is at least somewhat familiar with her surroundings and the person she will be spending her time with.

Parents need to spend some time away from their children so leaving your little one with a relative or a paid care provider is usually inevitable. Make the separation as comfortable as possible for you and your baby. Always visit new care facilities with your baby before leaving her alone. Most childcare centers, even those at your church or gym, will welcome a brief visit from you and your child. Visit at least once before leaving your baby. Keep the visit short but give your little one time to play and explore her new environment. Stay close but allow your child to play and interact without you.

On the first day, you and your baby may want to arrive at the location about 30 minutes early. Tell your baby where you will be while you are away and assure her that you will be back to get her soon. Give her plenty of hugs and kisses, but try not to make your separation too big of a deal. You may want to stay in the building, but out of sight, for a few minutes to give your little one a chance to settle in. Once you leave, do not return until time to pick up your baby to go home. If your child is having an exceptionally hard time, try limiting the first stay to no more than an hour. Separation anxieties are a troublesome time for most parents and their toddlers. Though your baby may scream and cry like your departure is the end of the world, her fears will typically subside within the first 15 to 30 minutes. We all know that anxiety is a condition we cause. It only lingers when we don’t understand it or know how to reverse it. In general, it helps one cope. But when anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it has become a disabling disorder. And when we say panic attacks these are sudden surges of overwhelming fear that that comes without warning and without any obvious reason. It is far more intense than having anxiety or the feeling of being ’stressed out’ that most people experience.

If you want to know on how anxiety panic attacks works you can ask anyone who has ever suffered from these kind of disorder on how horrible they feels. Yeah, I know that many of us have probably had one and just didn’t know what it was. Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress, but when anxiety becomes excessive, even routine situations become dreaded. Well, heres some sort of information I want to share it with you. According to my mother she used to call fear anxiety and depression the unholy Trinity. Although she was being melodramatic when she said it, it held a lot of truth for her. She always had some of the symptoms of anxiety attacks whenever things got tough for her. There are certain things she was phobic of and, no matter how much she did try to treat them, they never quite went away. Her fear anxiety symptoms, I am sorry to say, lasted from her childhood until the day of her death.

As for me, as a parents I want to raised my own kids, I vowed that nothing would give my children anxiety attacks. Sadly, there is only so much you can do as a parent. I don’t know what it is, but my youngest ended up having the same symptoms as my mother – fear anxiety and depression. There is only so much you can do as a parent to prevent certain conditions. What I really had to do was to get the kid treatment.

She got some relief from traditional methods. I didn’t want her to get drugs, but the doctor convinced me that anti anxiety medications would be very helpful to get the symptoms under control. Sure enough, once they were prescribed for her, she stopped having panic attacks. Then we got to the root cause of the fear anxiety. That required a lot of therapy. She went to a psychiatrist several times a week. That cost a lot of money, but it really helped her. Besides that, she started going to a children’s anxiety support group. In the long run, it worked wonders. Now she is a happy, healthy, well-adjusted kid. I am glad I stuck with her through all of it.
